Our animals remind us that every life, when given compassion and care, has the power to heal and inspire.

Meet the animals

  • The Donkeys

Meet Wayne and Diesel, two bonded boys who will capture your heart as soon as you enter the farm. Our boys came to us through Whispering River Rescue, the only donkey sanctuary in Western New York. These sweet beasts were pulled from a kill-pen in the southern United States as a bonded pair, so they needed to find a home where they could stay together. Because these boys are very smart and love people, they also need a space where they can interact regularly with visitors to play and work in order to be healthy and mentally strong.

  • The Goats

Full of personality…but never full!! Most of our goats have come to our sanctuary because they have been rescued from an unsafe situation, or because they have been “retired” from production farming. Many of them have unique concerns like an injury or illness that would make their survival impossible on a production farm. Our care farm offers them a second chance at life! Some of our goats enjoy taking trips to graze with Let’s Goat Buffalo as regenerative grazers, and others are more content to stay on the farm where they rest and enjoy plenty of attention from visitors and volunteers.

  • The Pigs

Mr. Pig was found wandering along Buffalo’s waterfront Unfortunately, when farm animals are found within city limits and have no immediate housing available to them, they are euthanized, so our friends at the SPCA reached out to us for foster help. Mr. Pig very quickly made himself at home, quickly bonding with our farm dog and everyone he met! It was clear that he was home forever. Within months, we got a call for another pig of the same size and breed who needed immediate placement. We weren't sure how Mr. Pig would feel about sharing his digs, but Miss Piggy was the perfect match! This inseparable piggy pair especially enjoy belly rubs!

  • The Chickens

Meet our large and in charge rooster, James and his friends! James is a dapper dude who struts his stuff with pride. The girls are a noisy but sweet bunch who enjoy displaying their very unique personalities- you’ll quickly find a favorite! Our original flock began when the Erie County SPCA had to remove an abundance of chickens from an unsafe situation. We are thrilled to host our amazing avian friends, as they play a huge role in keeping the farm healthy. Chickens eat slugs, snails and other insects that carry parasites that make goats and other mammals ill, while returning healthy nutrients to our soil. Bonus?? Sometimes we have eggs to share!

  • The Ducks

Open Farms provides a forever home for Musvovy Ducks who need human support. Muscovies are a unique breed of duck, and prefer a woody environment where they can explore, and occasionally roost in trees. Our muscovies are provided all the protections and comforts they need, while also being allowed to free range the farm. Our current resident female, Emma, came to us after being found in an urban environment, seeking out a human garage for shelter. Emma loves to be fed by hand, and tends to be a bit bossy. She seeks human attention and enjoys visitors- especially those who have treats!!
